However, how can you tell when you’ve found a good wine cooler?

The following five tips cover the most important functions that you’ll probably want to include:

1. Ensure It Can Hold All Your Bottles

Have an idea of the capacity you’ll need. How much wine do you plan on keeping? Wine refrigerator coolers range in capacity by a lot. The smallest hold only four bottles of wine. Meanwhile, other models can hold 100 or more, such as the dtw100 from Arctic Air. It just depends on your needs.

2. Be Aware That Some Wines Like It Warmer

If you’re storing a range of wines – in other words, whites as well as reds – it makes a lot of sense to store them at different temperature levels. For this reason, keep an eye out for what’s called “dual zone” wine coolers. This set up gives you control of 2 independent compartments with 2 independent temperature zones.

3. A Full View

You want to keep the temperature inside the unit consistent. So it doesn’t help if you need to open the doors each time just to see a particular bottle of wine. That’s why units such as the arctic air refrigerator come will glass-panel doors. All the bottles are clearly visible through the glass.

4. Simple To Reach

When you identify the bottle you’re looking for, you then want to reach it without any problems. So look for a wine cooler with shelves that slide out fully. This is so you don’t have to bend into the fridge too much, which could be hazardous.

5. Acceptable Noise Levels

Check to see the wine cooler refrigerator won’t be too noisy either. You don’t want a noisy refrigerator, especially if it’s near to where people spend a lot of time. Otherwise, they’re likely to be distracted.

Follow the tips above when buying a wine cooler, and they will help you find what you really need. This will leave you to free to enjoy the contents of the bottles to their full extent.

Bored Of Sauv Blanc & Chardonnay? Discover A New World Of Wine Types

Author: artmaraut13  //  Category: Wine Spirits Articles

It is human nature really – to stick with the tried and true and shy away from new types of wines. Pinot noir, shiraz, merlot, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, riesling, Yarra Valley, Barossa Valley, Marlborough, Central Otago. From wine to spaghetti sauce, it is usually the easier and safer option to take home a wine bottle that has hit the spot some time in the past. We are all built to be at least a little conservative with buying habits and it is a strategy that limits failure.

Take spaghetti sauce, where you’d expect them all to be a little sweet to taste, mixed with savoury tomato paste and herbs. Wine is a obviously in a very different league. With wine, you will find that there are so many different flavours, tastes and textures available. And naturally, the wine’s character comes down to the grape. Sure where the fruit is grown plays a part but grape variety is by far the most important factor in the overall experience from a glass of wine.

That said, wine is a wonderful beverage in that it can also give the consumer a taste of a different country or culture all from the comfort of a lounge chair. A point worth noting is that most (but not all grape varieties with sauvignon blanc one notable exception) taste best in wines from their homeland with varieties such as sangiovese, nebbiolo and tempranillo sometimes miraculous from Italy and Spain respectively. So with such variety to choose from all over the world why taste the same destination or grape every day when a world of flavour awaits from the local off-license or restaurant?

But where to begin? Pinot gris and pinot grigio, an interesting white with a lovely floral, sweet fruit flavour, is a good place to begin. Best known in the wines from Alsace in France, as well as the more delicately flavoured and zesty pinot grigio styles from Italy, it is a grape that is also coming good in the cool regions of Australia and New Zealand with fine wines that compare well with the rest of the world. Semillon is another white wine forever in the background but one that can make world class dry whites that are a little more restrained than varieties such as chardonnay and sauvignon blanc but lose nothing in complexity from vineyards in the Hunter and Barossa Valleys. In the world of whites, it is worth discovering grapes such as viognier, chenin blanc, gewürztraminer, and roussanne.

For red wines, there are plenty to sort through including the massive, full-bodied wines from grapes such as zinfandel or durif, or others with a little less density like cabernet franc or gamay. If personality is what you are looking for, sangiovese, nebbiolo and tempranillo seldom disappoint with savoury fruit flavour, rustic tannins and freshness of acidity that make them superb food wines.

Len Evans was quoted as saying that with so many bottles of wine to enjoy in our lives, one should not waste an opportunity to try taste something new and adventurous great Len Evans once said we only have one life to experience so many types of wine and the chance to try something interesting should never be wasted. It is clear that now is time for you to get to your local bottle shop and buy some wines types that you have never tried.

Which Are Australia’s Most Popular Wines To Collect?

Author: artmaraut13  //  Category: Wine Spirits Articles

Penfolds is the most popular brand among Australian fine wine collectors and it’s also one of the country’s largest wine storage companies – their flagship wine being the ultra–premium Penfold Grange.

Sydney based Wine Ark revealed that Coonawarra wine region in South Australia, is the most popular wine producing region among Australian collectors.

Wine Ark estimates it has more than fifty percent of the national Australian wine storage market.  Their comments come following their analysis of more than 3 million bottles of wine held in 8,500 private collections – and worth an estimated AUS$250m.  That’s an average of $83 per bottle.

Wine Ark CEO, Mr Dean Taylor, said the review is based on the volume of bottles in storage of each wine, and believes it is an accurate measure of variety of collectable wines across Australia.

The Foster’s-owned Penfolds has 8 of the top 50 wines. The next most popular being Wynn’s Coonawarra Estate, with 3 of the top 50 collectable wines.

Hardly suprising then that South Australia wine brands account for more than 60% of the Top 50 collectable wines.

Shiraz is the most popular wine to be collected, amassing 46% of the Top 50 wines.  And Coonawarra is the dominant wine region, providing 22% of the top 50.

‘It shows how much Australians have embraced Shiraz,’ said Taylor.
As yet, no Pinot Noir wines have made the top 50 collectable wines list. Taylor suggests this is because the Australian wineries are still developing the variety. As yet, not a great deal of Pinot Noir is being cellared.  Though this is expected to change over time.

Grange is the most collected Shiraz and red wine – and the most collected wine overall.  This was followed by Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz blend, which was the leader when Wine Ark released its original list of most popularly collected wines in 2006.

Interestingly, the most collected Pinot Noir was Mount Mary, from the Yarra Valley.  It might be expected to increase in collections over time.

In the Wine Wines, Leeuwin Estate Art Series was the most collectable wine and Chardonnay.  This was 11th overall.

The top top Riesling amogst Wine Ark collectors was Gosset Polish Hill, which was 13th overall.

The most collected Semillon, Tyrrell’s Vat 1, placed 26th overall.

The Flavors Of Wine

Wine Tasting Tips

Although the four main flavors – sweet, salty, sour, and bitter are all your tongue is really capable of tasting, the long lasting impression that wine leaves in your mouth is far more complex.  When you drink or taste wine, your taste buds and your sense of smell are involved, adding to the way you interpret wine overall.  The flavors, aromas, and sensations that wine is comprised of provide the interaction that you taste when you sample wine.

Sweetness is something that wines are well known for.  With most types of wine, grapes are responsible for the sweet taste.  Grapes contain a lot of sugar, which breaks the yeast down into alcohol.  The grapes and yeast that were used to produce the wine will leave behind various sugars, which your tongue will be able to quickly detect.  Once your tongue detects these various sugars, the stimulation of sweetness from the wine will be ever so present in your mouth.

Alcohol is also present in wine, although your tongue doesn’t really know how to decipher the taste of alcohol.  Even though the tongue doesn’t really taste alcohol, the alcohol is present in the mouth.  The alcohol found in wine will dilate blood vessels and therefore intensify all of the other flavors found in the wine.  After you have samples a few types of wine, the alcohol level can easily have an effect on your taste buds, making it hard to distinguish other drinks that you may have.

Another flavor is acidity, which will effect the sugars.  With the proper balance of acidity, the overall flavor of wine can be very overwhelming.  Once you taste wine that contains it, the flavor of the acidity will be well known to your tongue.  Although acidity is great with wine, too much of it will leave a very sharp taste.  With the right levels, acidity will bring the flavors of the grape and fruits alive in your mouth – providing you with the perfect taste.

Yet another effect of flavor are tannins, which are the proteins found in the skins of grapes and other fruits.  If a wine has the right amount of tannins, it will give your tongue a great feel, and bring in the sensations of the other flavors.  Once a wine starts to age, the tannins will begin to breakdown in the bottle, giving you a softer feel to the taste.  Tannins are essential for the taste of wine – providing the wine has been properly aged.

The last flavor associated with wine is oak.  Although oak isn’t put into the wine during the manufacturing process, it is actually transferred during the aging process, as most wines will spend quite a bit of time in oak barrels.  Depending on how long the wine is left in the oak barrel or cask, the ability to extract the flavor will vary.  Most often times, wine will be aged just enough to where the oak taste is visibly there – and adds the perfect sentiment to the taste.

Although there are other flavors involved with the taste of wine, they aren’t as present as those listed above.  The above flavors are the most present in wine, and also the flavors that you need to get more familiar with.  Before you try to taste wine or distinguish flavors, you should always learn as much you can about the components responsible for the flavors.  This way – you will know more about what you are tasting and you’ll truly be able to appreciate wine.

Decorating For A Party – Food And Beverage

Author: artmaraut13  //  Category: Wine Spirits Articles

Setting up for a party can be an exhilarating process that is not without its stresses and hassles. One of the most difficult elements of party decorating is figuring out how to present food, beverages, and other forms of culinary nourishment to your guests. In this arena your best method will be to take a measured approach which involves both decorative aspects, and functional selections.

You have to remember though, that most foods are perishable, and will degrade over time if left out. While crackers and chips might be able to survive unharmed in open air for a few hours, most salads, or cooked foods, will need to be refrigerated prior to the party in order to keep them fresh. Many foods will also taste best if they’ve been recently heated, and are still warm, prompting decisions as to whether you want to spend part of the party in the kitchen cooking.

Another problem with leaving food out before hand is the potential for bugs to be attracted to the delectable smells. If you do decide to leave various elements out, you should be sure to cover them, either with an appropriate lid, or with cellophane, or tin foil, to protect them from the ravages of creepy crawlers.

If you want to get fancy, a buffet table can be outfitted with burners that are placed under aluminum dishes to keep the food warm without you having to go to the trouble of reheating it. Again you will want to keep the dishes covered, and will have to control the flame to make sure the food doesn’t get dried out, or burnt.

Drinks are another consideration. Beverages often have to be kept either very cool, or very hot. If it’s cold outside, you can put cold drinks in a cooler and leave them outside to stretch fridge space. Ice can also help to quickly cool down a glass of soda or juice. You should be careful about placing beverages in a freezer to cool them down quickly, because if you forget about them, the liquid might freeze, expand, and cause the container it’s in to explode. Beverage coasters are another way to protect your home from drinks.

You usually want all of the food, drinks, and accessories to be set up way before the party actually starts. Then in the early twilight hours of the event, when only a few people have shown up yet, start extracting goodies from the fridge and warming or cooling them to the optimal temperature. Try to get as much work out of the way early as you can and then you’ll have less to do when the festivities begin.
