Getting Set Up to Make Beer

Home Brew Academy

The hobby of brewing your own beer at home is growing steadily as more people discover how much fun they can have making their beer at home and how great absolutely fresh beer can be.  There may be no more gratifying moment for a home brewer than to serve your own fresh beer to your guests iced down in your favorite beer mugs and hear the rave that your beer is as good as the store bought beer they like best or maybe even better!

Part of the reason for the huge popularity is that getting set up to make beer and finding good supplies and equipment is neither difficult nor overly expensive.  You can find or create the equipment fairly easily or get it discounted from others who have retired from the brewing business.  And right now there is probably a home brewing store in your town ready and able to provide you with the ingredients as well as instruction books and recipes for all kinds of wonderful tasting beers you can make right at home.  And with the explosion of web sites, ebooks and articles out there on the internet about home brewing, all the help you could ask for is at your fingertips to help you get started.

The reason different people get into home brewing vary.  Some love the social aspect as you join a large local and international community of brewers.  Another reason is that it is just great fun to assemble the equipment, learn the recipes and take a stab at making your own home grown batch of tasty beer.  Even if you “botch” a batch of beer, its all in the spirit of learning and it just drives you on to learn from your mistakes to make even better beer next time.

A third great reason is you have so much more control over your beer when you brew it yourself.  Because you are not dealing with a beer that is mass produced and shipped from hundreds of miles away, you can control the taste, the consistency and even the level of alcohol to make your beer as strong or mild as you want it to be.  And you can make changes with each batch with virtually endless variations on the recipes that are available to the home brewing community.

The supplies you will need to get started are easy to find and not very expensive either.  Probably the best way to get a feel for what the best equipment is and who are the suppliers to favor would come from becoming a regular at home brewing clubs and gatherings and making some friends there.  If you make it well known that you are a “new recruit” and need some mentoring in how to get set up, you will be overwhelmed with offers for you to sit in on a brewing session or two to get a feel for the process.  If you take advantage of their zeal to help you get started, you will be way ahead on the game when you go shopping for the stuff you need to get set up to make your own beer at home.

The equipment you will need is pretty much only used for brewing beer so you will need to think of storage.  The pot for boiling your initial wort and the equipment to handle the beer, filter it and ferment it are all made in sizes and at prices to encourage the home brewing markets.  You can find them at retail prices at your home brewing retail outlet in town.  You can use the internet and shop second hand shops to get better prices.  But many like to patronize the home brewing store that helped them get their start just to make sure they stay in business to keep selling you great fresh ingredients.

That same retail outlet will be a good source for the grains, yeasts and hops you need for the actual production of beer.  Freshness is the key so communicate with the management of the store to learn of just how fresh those things are. As with the equipment, you can buy these things from the internet and that is fine.  But get to know your supplier whoever you use and make sure you are confident you are getting the highest quality materials to make your home made beer. It will make a big difference.

A Perfect Hobby For That Guy Who Loves Beer

A Perfect Hobby for that Guy Who Loves Beer

Home Brew Academy

If the man in your life is thinking of getting into brewing beer because he loves drinking different beers, there are some solid reasons to encourage that enthusiasm.  Your first reflex might be that he already has a love of beer and that making his own is going over the top.  But in truth, making the move toward home brewing has a lot going for it and it is a very creative and productive approach to the love of fine beers.

There is a difference between a true lover of beer as a fine beverage and the average “beer guzzler”.  Beer actually has a rich history and the diversity of flavors, textures and blends of beers is almost as strong as the wine culture which we know is one where real connoisseurs know what a fine wine is.  So the move toward making beer identifies with that side of the beer culture that seeks the finest in flavors in beer and seeks to become part of the way very good beer is made rather than just be a consumer.

By encouraging your beer connoisseur to develop this new found passion for beer making, you are emphasizing the noble and creative side of his love of good beer. And the new social connections that novice beer makers find at retail beer brewing stores and local societies devoted to this hobby will help him become educated in the best way to make a truly fine beer at home.   Once that home brewing hobby takes off, the passion to make beer becomes more about improving the quality and taste of the beer he makes even more than just drinking a beer that you made yourself.  And that is a productive and creative way to approach his passion for beer.

Along with the creative side of beer making, if you start to produce your own beer at home, there are some economic benefits.  Like everything else, beer prices are going up.  But the costs of making a batch of beer at home are phenomenally low if you break it down to a per glass cost.  Now there is equipment to buy up front.  But it’s a myth that getting set up for making beer at home costs an arm and a leg.  You don’t have to set up a brewery on the scale you may have seen when you toured the beer factory in St. Louis last summer.  There are beer kits that give you all of the basic equipment you will need and you can usually have a home beer production factory going at home for under $200.   And when you consider you can make many gallons of great tasting beer with that same set up, that’s a pretty smart investment.

It’s not out of the question that if your beer loving guy develops his abilities as a Brewmeister, you may find a market to sell the beer he makes.  There are lots of brew pubs that specialize in quality home made beers.  So if he can develop a unique taste and recipe that can be replicated consistently, you may be able to bottle it and sell it at local pubs.  If that beer gets some popularity with the local beer drinking popularity, you may be able to make back your investment in equipment and supplies to make beer and even turn a nice profit from a great hobby.

These are all good reasons for you to encourage that fascination with how to make beer at home in your loved one.  And if you jump in feet first and become a beer maker yourself, this new hobby can become a family affair and a wonderful way to share the fun together.  And who knows, you may even get to be a bit of a beer connoisseur yourself!

A Brewing Society

A Brewing Society

One of the reasons the hobby of home brewing is so popular is that you are not just taking up a pastime, you are becoming part of a closely knit society of home brewing that has its own culture, language and social structure that is unique to brewers alone.

Of course, the social aspect of drinking beer is well known.  The infrastructure of pubs and bars that offers to patrons a place of comfort, friendship, fun and relaxation is about a lot more than just tipping back a delicious drink,.  It is a part of our social fabric that goes back to revolutionary times when our most important documents were hashed out over a beer.  And the importance of sharing a beer is just as powerful today as we all enjoyed thinking about that bar where “everybody knows your name” called Cheers.

So just as the social aspect of enjoying a beer with others is strong and well entrenched in our culture, so too is the art of making beer a deeply rooted part of society that goes back generations.  That popularity has regular revivals and we are seeing a surge of interest in brewing today as all over the country brew pubs are springing up around delicious home grown beers that in many cases are far better than the mass produced beers that are heavily advertised during the Super Bowl.

This well developed and sophisticated brewing subculture not only will be of great help to you as you start to learn about becoming a home brewer yourself, it will become a society that is a lot of fun to be part of and where you may make friends for life as you share with others your love of making your own beer.  In America the grass roots level subculture of home brewing is growing fast.  This is no small concern to the big retail brewers who cannot possibly make the quality and rich kinds of beers that can be made at the local level.  But this is a natural evolution as we follow our cousins in the UK where keg beers made locally dominate the world of beer consumption in a culture where pubs are a central part of the fabric of society.

One reason home brewing has such an appeal is the tremendous diversity of beers you can produce and the control you have over flavor, consistency and alcohol levels.  In most cases, once you have your basic equipment for brewing beer, it is cheaper to make your own beer.  And there is something satisfying about brewing up a big batch of beer to put back to ferment as you enjoy a five gallon batch you made last month.  Beer brewers can become quite obsessed with flavor, color and “punch” and always be looking for new ways to become better at this fun and interesting hobby.

Whatever level of involvement in beer making appeals to you, you can probably find new friends in the beer brewing society that you can share your hobby with.  There are beer brewing radio stations and ham radio channels devoted to helping amateur brewers share their secret recopies and solve each other’s problems.  And there are home made beer competitions that can really put some challenge that all on you to make that blue ribbon beer that rally makes the judges sit up and take notice.

So as you find yourself getting more and more enthusiastic and “caught up” in the fun of home brewing, don’t be embarrassed by that because you can find a diverse assortment of other beer making enthusiasts to share your hobby with.  So have fun, make friends, make good beer and above all, share your beer and your knowledge with others.  Because beer is about more than good drink.   It’s about good times with good people as well.

Wine Aerator Pourers – The Art Of The Perfect Wine

Author: artmaraut13  //  Category: Wine Spirits Articles

Wine aerator pourers have really come a long way in recent years. Gone are the days when a wine drinker had to pull the cork on a bottle 5 hours before his guest arrived and pour the wine into a decanter.

The best way to sample a bottle of red is after it has had the chance to breathe. Breathing allows for aeration which is the process of air being pushed into your wine allowing for the hidden flavors to escape and achieves a smooth finish.

Wine aerators act as both a decanter and air infuser and solve the problem of decanting up to 5 hours before serving your guests. Your wine is aerated instantly by virtue of a pourer that sits on top of your wine bottle. Ideal for those of us who like to have a glass of red on the spur of the moment.

There are now numerous wine aerators available. The first type of wine aerator is manufactured to sit on top of a table, an example of this type of wine aerator is the Vinturi. The second type of wine aerator is pushed onto the top of a wine bottle, an example of this type of wine aerator is the Soiree wine aerator. Both types of wine aerator have their critics but a search online will set you on the right path with good and bad reviews.

I prefer using the Soiree bottle top aerator for informal events as it allows anyone to aerate your wine straight from the bottle. They are easy to use and you do not have to worry about the speed at which you pour or the drips that can be annoying when using a table top aerator.

However for the true wine aeration experience, I use the Vinturi table top aerator. It really does a good job and provides a table show piece. There is a method that one has to learn with respect to the speed at which the wine is poured and also a technique to avoid wine from dripping out of the appliance. But for wine that really does blossom with flavor and smoothness I have found no other aerator to match it.

Beware though some users have complained about the rather strange gurgling sound that it makes. But to me this is all part of the fun of using the Vinturi and adds to the process of wine aeration. If you would like a no fuss wine aerator pourer then look no further than the Soiree.

Prepare Healthy Drinks For Your Kids This Christmas

Author: artmaraut13  //  Category: Wine Spirits Articles

We often look at how to make the kids eat healthy foods more often. We are worried about the food they eat and always warn them about eating too many junk foods. This is good, but aside from monitoring what they eat, we should also keep an eye on what they drink.

Even if we can prevent our kids from eating foods that are unhealthy, they will not be any healthier if they still drink tons of unhealthy drinks because these unhealthy drinks can also be sources of preservatives and empty calories. Therefore, together with unhealthy food, drinks that are not good for the body must be kept away from the table.

To help keep them from drinking beverages with no health benefits, offer them healthy drinks instead. This will help them quench their thirst so that they will not want to drink sodas anymore. In addition, they will have more vitamins and minerals in the process.

The Strawberry Nosed Reindeer is one of the many beneficial drinks that you can concoct. It tastes delicious, too. You can call it any name you want, like Santa’s Strawberry Shots, as long as you can get your child’s attention. To prepare this drink recipe, simply warm up the blender and prepare the ingredients. You will need two cups of cranberry juice, 10 ounces of sweetened strawberries which have been sliced and frozen, one juiced lemon, and two cups of ice. Mix all the ingredients together and blend until smooth.

Now, the only problem that remains is how to convince them to drink your freshly prepared healthy thirst-quencher instead of that delicious looking soda in the fridge that looks so tempting. Fortunately, it is Christmastime, and adults are enjoying their evenings having Christmas shots with friends and family. You can make use of this by disguising your healthy drinks as the kid’s version of Christmas shots. The kids will have fun watching TV with their pals while drinking healthy Christmas shots and forgetting about that soda.

Temperature Storage Of Wine

Author: artmaraut13  //  Category: Wine Spirits Articles

After your wine has been bottled you will need to take careful steps to ensure that careful temperatures are maintained in order for the wine to remain stable. In most cases, it is best to store your wine in cool temperatures. For long-term storage, most bottled wines do better when stored at a temperature of about 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The reason why it is so important to store wine at cool temperatures is because cool temperatures help to reduce the effects of oxidation.

Keep in mind; however, that you do not necessarily need to obsess if you absolutely cannot obtain a storage facility at exactly 55 degrees. The improvement provided for each degree in temperature you are able to reduce in the storage area is really only marginal. Of course, a dark area that has a temperature of 65 degrees is always going to better than an area with a lot of light that has an average temperature of 75 degrees. Being able to store your wine in an area at 55 degrees; however, would only be slightly better than the 65 degree storage area.

The most important key is to try to avoid fluctuations in temperature in the area where you store your bottled wine, even if this means that area is slightly warmer than 55 degrees. Changes in temperature can be very difficult on bottled wine. Over time, temperature fluctuations will wear down your wine. Wine that is stored in an area with temperature fluctuations will take on a weak aroma and may begin to lose its character. The main reason that temperature changes have such an effect on bottled wine is due to the expansion and contraction that occurs.

When temperatures change, anything in that area naturally expands and contracts. With bottled wine, the glass in the bottle will expand and contract; however, the wine inside the bottle will also expand and contract. They do not expand and contract at the same level; however. Wine tends to expand and contract at a far greater level than the glass in the wine bottle. The result is the buildup of pressure inside the bottle. The aroma of the wine may then seep through the cork. In addition, the expansion and contraction process can result in carbon dioxide seeping into the wine through the cork and the vacuum that is left in the process. This can result in a very bad taste in your wine.

In some cases, you may not be certain whether the temperature in your storage area is stable. In that case, it is a good idea to set up a monitoring system to make sure that the temperatures are remaining stable. It is not uncommon for an area that was thought to be quite stable to have temperature fluctuations. In some cases, these fluctuations can amount to as much as 10 degrees each day. Over time, this can prove to be disastrous for your wine. Therefore, if you are not entirely certain that your storage area is consistent in terms of temperature it really is a good idea to monitor it over a period of time to make sure that the temperature is remaining consistent. Keep in mind that when monitoring your storage area, you should check the temperature at least twice a day at different times in order to get an accurate idea of whether the temperature is remaining stable on a daily basis.

Noble Rot And Why It’s Good For Wine

Author: artmaraut13  //  Category: Wine Spirits Articles

What is ‘Noble Rot’? Rot is something we never associate with positive effects. We wouldn’t unplug our fridges to introduce it to 99.9% of our food under the impression that it would somehow make our food taste better (so please don’t!). However, there exist certain fungi that have a positive effect on your food and drink. Control is essential in the process: the grey fungus Botrytis Cinerea can turn malignant. The initial contraction of Botrytis Cinerea occurs when over-ripe grape are exposed to a spell of moist weather. ‘Grey rot’ is the classic result of leaving infection to take its course in continued wet weather. However, if dry weather (or other dry conditioning) occurs post infection, noble rot sets in.

An example of Noble rot in action is Coteaux du Layon, a sweet white Chenin Blanc Wine grown in the beautiful French Loire Valley. Noble rot wines like the Coteaux du Layon are typically full of sweet, concentrated tastes. Botrytisation is practiced around the world, but it tends to be a feature of ‘old world’ wine growing. European winemaking is an ancient practice, and produce like Austrian Ausbruch uses complex noble rot techniques with Pinot blanc grapes, which are themselves a complex mutant breed of  Pinot Noir Wine grapes.

So, how did wine producers stumbles upon the phenomenon? Was it a scientific study into fungi effects, or merely a desperate attempt to produce wine from spoilt grapes? The truth is unclear. Various wine growing regions lay claim to the discovery, each having a legend of origin for the practice. Predictably though, not one of these stories is verifiable, and all are actually not the earliest references to the practice (dated back to at least the 15th Century). Hungary’s legend is one of the earliest claims, claiming the invention of the noble rot method in 1630. The Rheingau region of Germany has a folk story, claiming that noble rot was first practised in the production of Riesling wine. The story goes that in 1775, a messenger en route from the Bishop of Fulda was robbed and the directive to harvest the grapes was consequently not communicated. The peasantry took the discarded wine and made an even better tasting blend. Whilst this is clearly not truly the invention of the noble rot technique, it could provide a date for its use in Riesling wines, which are among the varieties most commonly and successfully subjected to noble rot.

Is There A Relationship Between Dementia And Thanksgiving Shots?

Author: artmaraut13  //  Category: Wine Spirits Articles

Apparently there may be. However, the picture of this relationship is a bit complex. In some studies, moderate drinking of alcoholic beverages, like Thanksgiving shots, reduces the risk of dementia in older adults. The average age of the group was in the mid-70s. This is the age group that is more susceptible to dementia, so it is a good thing that the positive effects of moderate drinking apply to them. Maybe, it is time to bring out those mixed Thanksgiving shots and celebrate a bit.

While a link between moderate drinking and reduced risk of dementia has been noticed in older adults, how that works is not yet clear to the experts. One possible reason is the opportunity to socialize with other people. Normally, Thanksgiving shots are taken during gatherings and Thanksgiving parties. With these social settings, people interact enjoy yourself. These activities could be very important in preventing dementia.

Alcoholic drinks have been known to facilitate blood circulation. Because of this, drinking alcoholic Thanksgiving shots may help prevent or reduce mini strokes in the brain and other subtle types of brain injury. Since these subtle brain injuries may lead to dementia, drinking alcoholic drinks may prevent dementia indirectly by preventing these subtle brain injuries. These reasons why moderate drinking is linked to reduced risk of dementia still need more research, though.

Nevertheless, alcohol is a two-edged sword. The fact that it offers some benefits to your health does not mean that you have to drink lots of it to obtain more benefits. You should only consume light to moderate amounts of the substance. Long-term alcohol abuse has a negative effect to your memory and cognitive function. Furthermore, the problem is not only medical; obsession with alcohol also causes social havoc.

If you are a responsible drinker who knows his or her limits, then you need not quit. Enjoy a shot or two of Thanksgiving drinks with your friends. Just remember not to drink in excess.
