Wine has been a very prestigious integral part of social gatherings for ages, all across the world. After all it’s a great gift, very enjoyable with a meal , further enhancing it’s flavors, and consumed in the proper amount it could give you a healthy body, being rich in anti-oxidants.

As a simple wine consumer, you can keep your wines in your kitchen, on wine racks, in the refrigerator, like everybody else. We all know that wine just gets better with the age (vintage wine) , so keeping around more bottles of wine might  turn people into a  wine enthusiast and you might find one day that you are running out of space for wine. This is the time when you consider building your own wine cellar in the basement.

We can find out easily that the basement would be the best spot for a wine cellar, since the main factors that you should protect the wine from is heat, sunlight and moisture. Most basements wouldn’t be living areas, so it’s a lot easier to make some changes on it.Obviously before contacting a contractor you need to get the proper permits and always do a follow-up with the current regulations on doing such changes in your basement.

Before starting any work there are a few things that should be taken in consideration.Always keep in mind the amount of space you have, and don’t forget some of the space might be lost with the installation of proper insulation, which will be important keeping the temperature and humidity for your precious wines. Not only the walls but the materials of doors is important as well,as the occurrence of moisture most likely would result in  molding. A normal aging temperature for wine would be between 10-14 Celsius  ( 50-57 Fahrenheit), so maintaining that temperature is important.

A temperature lower than that would slower the aging process. So keeping mind the amount of space there is at hand will help you design the place. You might want to add the wine racks you used in your kitchen, but might consider buying new ones. Also, wine coolers are essential parts of wine cellars. There are multiple types of them, built in your wall, standing ones, or hidden under the counter. They could hold up  anywhere between 6-30 bottles ,and obviously their price will change based on that.
